There are certain food types that have been found to aggravate, either directly or indirectly, the acid reflux condition in most people. And so, avoiding these food substances will greatly help in making the number of acid attacks fewer in number.

  • Fast food comprising deep fried and fatty food.
  • Chocolate.
  • Citrus fruits (such as lemons and oranges) and their juices.
  • Tea, coffee and other beverages containing caffeine.
  • Spirits and alcohol.
  • Onions, especially raw onions.
  • Potato chips, french fries and spicy mashed potatoes.
  • Ground beef and marbled sirloin.
  • Rich, fatty salad dressings.
  • Hot spaghetti, served with tomato sauce.
  • Cheese and macaroni.

The list above is not a complete one. There could be many other food substances which might trigger an acid reflux condition in you. Actually, the list that has been above is just the tip of the iceberg. One must discover the list of foods that are well tolerated through a process of trial and error. Keeping a food diary would be helpful with which you could keep a tab on the level of tolerance against each new food item that you consume. This approach often helps. However as each one of us are different as also are our bodies and internal systems, a particularly food item may cause a problem (or aid) for someone, and be completely neutral for another.

It might take up to a month to arrive at a list of suitable (and unsuitable) food types. But once this is achieved, it would become very easy to stay safe.

Avoiding acid reflux inducing food items is effective in ensuring that the condition does not occur frequently or is not aggravated. However, it does not offer a lasting cure and is not a complete solution to the acid reflux problem. That is because the real cause that gave rise to the acid reflux remains within the body. If you are serious about finding a permanent cure, you must turn to holistic remedies. Physiologically, stre ss can cause the digestive system to come to a screeching halt. Food that should be moving along will linger and magnify the effects of acid reflux. Under stress the body sends energy to the muscles, via the blood stream, to help the body cope with a stressful situation. This means that less blood, or energy, is flowing to the digestive system. When digestion is slowed down in this manner, undigested food and gastric juices remain in the stomach much longer enhancing the occurrence of acid reflux.

Stress can also cause people to experience changes in behavior like the immoderate consumption of alcohol and so called "comfort foods". It can also lead to late night binging and excessive smoking. All of these can trigger the symptoms of acid reflux by producing excessive acid in the stomach and relaxing the Lower Esophageal sphincter or (LES). When the LES is relaxed, stomach acid can splash up from the stomach into the esophagus, causing the pain of heartburn.

The "fight or flight syndrome" caused by stress can cause the body to tense up, delivering most of its energy to the heart, lungs and muscles. This intensifies hyperacidity, as the stomach is robbed of oxygen and enzymes necessary for proper digestion.

About half of the people who suffer from heartburn attribute it to stress. Whether stress is related to unpleasant work situations, emotional disorders, money problems, family strife or social conflicts, there are many things which can be done to restore the needed harmony in one’s life.

Whether you suffer from chronic acid reflux and find that stress exacerbates the condition, or you experience occasional acid reflux brought on by bouts of stress, consider the following:

Take the pressure off yourself – Lining up too many goals to be accomplished in too short a period of time can be very stressful. Do one thing at a time. Learn to relax and learn to say no when others become too demanding. Set your priorities straight and make lists that you can stick to. Go easy on yourself.

Take your mind off of you – "Loosing your mind" is not the worst thing you can do. Meditation, Tai Chi, Hatha Yoga, Chi Gong and self-hypnotism are all great ways to relieve stress. Focusing on a demanding activity will take your mind off what is causing the stress. Not thinking about yourself can be very beneficial. These arts can also be applied to enhance life with positive improvement.

Exercise your way to peace of mind – Everyone knows that exercise is essential for good health. Besides the physical benefits it is also an important way to relieve stress. Who has time to think about problems when you’re about to win a tennis match! The endorphins produced in your brain while exercising create an opiate-like "good feeling" sensation that can take you far away from the cares of the day. It is important to find a way to make exercise fun, whether it be jogging with your dog or playing ball with your friends.

"Let it be" – You cannot control everything in life. There will always be planes that are late arrivals or departures. The weather may not cooperate with that family picnic that you planned. Your mother-in-law may show up when least expected and there will always be taxes to pay. It is important to learn to roll with the punches. You can always find something good in an otherwise bad situation, but most importantly don’t let it stress you out.

Maintain an optimistic attitude – Never underestimate the power of positive thinking. Focus on the good things – not the bad things. Be excited about the future and believe that only good is in store for you. Better than projecting the future, concentrate on the present and demonstrate gratitude in the moment. Being optimistic not only affects others in a positive way, it gives you the balance that you need to be stress free.

Have a good laugh! – Laughter is the great healer. A good laugh can relieve more stress than anything else. Watch a funny movie, go to a comedy club or go see Hunter Blue perform at Mimi’s in New York City. Try to associate with people who make you laugh, or at least don’t make you frown. Maintain a good sense of humor at all times. Stress cannot exist where there is laughter.

Love a dog or a cat – Pet animals are a sure cure for stress. Their pure unaffected love and funny antics can blow that stress away. If you can’t muster the obligation of responsibility for a pet, borrow someone else’s pet or volunteer to be a care taker when they are out of town. Pets have a tranquilizing affect on us and their power to diminish stress should not be overlooked.

Talk to a friend – It’s very therapeutic when a trusted friend gives advice and thoughtful support. We all need objective guidance at times. Sympathy from friends and relatives has a calming affect and can reduce stress. It’s almost as if you are not bearing your problems alone anymore and that kind of encouragement is invaluable.

Get a massage – There is nothing quite as stress relieving as a good massage. I find that going for acupuncture is very relaxing as well. If you can’t manage a massage, indulge in a long hot bath, whirlpool or steam shower.

It has been said that stress is a killer. Thankfully, its reduction is not rocket science and is quite easily accomplished. By reducing the stress in our lives, we can minimize the effect of the acid reflux condition. Of course there are other factors involved with acid reflux, but stress is certainly one of the big ones and should be dealt with in a serious manner. Relax!

Acid Reflux Disease And Back Pain – Are They Connected?

With all of the information on acid reflux disease or GERD that is available, back pain is NOT in the mix. While it is true that there is no apparent connection between Acid reflux disease and back pain, there is an indirect possibility. As part of the treatment for GERD or acid reflux disease, positional therapy might be prescribed. This includes such things as sleeping on the left side or sleeping with the head elevated. You are probably asking yourself what this has to do with acid reflux disease.

Acid reflux is a weakening of the muscles associated with the esophagus. The stomach produces acids and materials, which are supposed to be kept in the stomach. This is done through a combination of valves and muscular structures between the top of the stomach and the throat. When these muscular structures are weakened, the acid in the stomach is allowed to enter into the esophagus-sometimes all the way into the mouth.

That being said, it should become obvious why the use of positional therapy is sometimes used. The acid is subject to gravity. So when you are lying flat on your back, the weakened valves allow the acid to submit to gravity’s pull and travel up the esophagus. When this happens, the sufferer may awaken several times during the night with severe pain in the chest. This pain occasionally makes it’s way around to the back. Many acid reflux patients report moderate to severe upper back and neck pain associated with attacks of acid reflux.

The remedy for some acid reflux sufferers is to sleep with the head and shoulders elevated a bit and this may be why some people combine together acid reflux and back pain. While this may lessen or even alleviate the nocturnal acid reflux, it needs to be done properly and, if not done properly, may indirectly cause chronic lower back pain as well. This back pain will not be immediate, but can occur over a period of time. That can mean lasting damage to the back. Since acid reflux does not directly affect the back (the back pain is always an indirect by-product), please consult your physician in all cases.

It is well and good to mention that sometimes, pain from acid reflux that radiates to the back can indicate a cardiac condition. Also, the back pain associated with acid reflux may be hidden among other pains and, as a result, overlooked or simply ignored. In some cases, a chiropractor may be the ticket.

If you have found yourself in any of these situations, it is imperative that you consult a physician. Statistics show that patients who seek out medical treatment for acid reflux have less occurrences and a lower level of pain. Only your doctor knows for sure what the best remedy is in each case.

So to summarize, acid reflux disease and back pain are related simply because back pain is an indirect product of positional therapy used to treat the pain associated with acid reflux disease. It can be relieved through proper elevation of the head and shoulders as prescribed by a doctor. If the back pain is chronic or high level, a chiropractor may be consulted.

Acid Reflux Medication – Everything You Need To Know About Acid Reflux

Acid reflux is also known as Gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly called GERD. This is a chronic condition where the liquid in your stomach refluxes back into the esophagus. The acid is what does the most harm. Once this condition begins, it usually lasts a lifetime. Those who are pregnant or have weakened esophageal muscles are more susceptible to acid reflux.

One of the easiest treatments for acid reflux is changing your life style, particularly eating habits. Acid reflux tends to be worse at night. Elevating the bed with books or blocks raises the esophagus above the stomach and brings the body’s gravity back to normal. The entire upper body must be elevated for this to work.

Changing what you eat can be very helpful. Reflux is worse after meals, so eating smaller meals and at an earlier time might reduce the amount of reflux. The smaller amount of food will lower the distention of the stomach and the smaller meals will have time to empty out of the stomach. With the food being emptied out, it is less likely for acid reflux to occur. There are many foods that encourage reflux. Some include: alcohol, caffeinated drinks, peppermint, chocolate, fatty foods and spicy foods. These foods should be avoided.

There are many medications to treat acid reflux, but antacids are usually used as treatment. Antacids neutralize the acid in the stomach ridding the reflux. The only downside is that they only last for a brief period of time, empty out of the stomach quickly and then the acid returns. If antacids are used, they need to be taken an hour after a meal or just before the reflux symptoms start. Sometimes a second does is needed.

A histamine antagonist was the first medication created for the treatment of acid-released diseases. They work by blocking the receptor for histamine and prevent it from activating the acid-producing cells. These are best taken 30 minutes before a meal. Histamine antagonists relieve symptoms and do not heal inflammation. They are available by prescription.

The second drug made for acid related diseases was proton pump inhibitors. They block the release of acid into the stomach. These inhibitors block off acid production better and for longer periods of time. They are good for symptoms as well as protecting the esophagus from damage.

Foam barriers are often used as a treatment for acid reflux. These are made of antacid and a foaming agent. When the tablet reaches the stomach, it turns into foam and forms a barrier to the reflux. These are best taken after meals and when lying down. They are not used as an only source but added to other drugs to relieve symptoms.

With life-style changes as well as antacids and prescriptions, acid reflux symptoms can be relieved. Many foods need to be avoided and medication has be taken at the right times to help.

Acid Reflux in Teenagers – Recognize The Symptoms!

When most people think of acid reflux, or heartburn, we tend to associate it with older adults, overweight people, or pregnant women. While acid reflux is common in these groups, chronic acid reflux or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is also occurring more frequently in teenagers. While eating the wrong foods can exacerbate the problem, even healthy teenagers can have acid reflux disease.

What is Acid Reflux in Teenagers?

Acid reflux occurs when food from the stomach backs up into the esophagus, the pipe that food travels down leading from the mouth to the stomach. In most cases, acid reflux results when a muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES, doesn’t perform its job properly. The LES is designed to relax to allow food traveling through the esophagus to enter the stomach. Once food is in the stomach, the LES is supposed to close so that stomach contents can’t wash back up the esophagus. When the LES doesn’t close completely or opens when it shouldn’t, acid reflux is the result.

Acid reflux in teenagers isn’t always associated with GERD. It’s normal for just about everyone to experience heartburn on occasion, especially when we’ve eaten too much. Sometimes a distended and overly full stomach won’t allow the LES to close properly. But acid reflux in teenagers that occurs frequently for up to a few hours, and that is typically worse after eating, may be a sign of GERD.

Treating chronic acid reflux in teenagers is important, because over time, repeated episodes of acid reflux can seriously damage the esophagus. This can lead to painful irritation and inflammation of the esophagus. GERD that remains untreated over a long period of time can even lead to cancer later on.

How is Acid Reflux in Teenagers Diagnosed?

Diagnosis of acid reflux in teenagers typically begins with an examination of symptoms. Teenagers who commonly experience the following symptoms may have acid reflux disease:

Bad breath
Dry, unproductive cough
Sore throat and hoarseness
Sour or acid taste in the mouth
Frequent regurgitation, or burping up food
Difficulty swallowing
A sense that food is caught in the throat
A choking feeling that may wake one from sleep

If a teen experiences one or more of these symptoms frequently, a doctor may perform the following diagnostic tests:

Barium swallow radiograph -This is a kind of X-ray that shows whether or not liquid is backing up into the esophagus, and whether or not the esophagus is irritated or inflamed. This involves drinking a barium-containing liquid that will show up on the X-ray.

Upper endoscopy – This involves using a tube with a tiny camera on it to visualize the stomach, esophagus, and some of the small intestines.

How is Acid Reflux Treated?

Acid reflux in teenagers can be treated using lifestyle approaches, over-the-counter medicines, or prescription medicines. Teenagers with acid reflux disease should avoid foods that exacerbate the problem. Some common trigger foods include fatty foods, citrus foods, chocolate, food containing caffeine, spicy foods, tomato sauces, and garlic and onions.

Other ways to help control acid reflux include smoking cessation, avoiding alcohol, and weight loss in those who are overweight. Eating small meals and wearing loose clothing can also help prevent acid reflux by relieving pressure on the LES that may cause it to malfunction. Over the counter antacids may help relieve symptoms when well-controlled GERD results in the occasional bout of reflux.

If you think your teenager is suffering from acid reflux, see your family physician. Doctors may prescribe or advise that you buy over the counter H2 blockers that can help decrease the production of stomach acid.

In moderate to severe cases, doctors may prescribe a group of medicines call proton pump inhibitors. Surgery is a last resort, and is rarely recommended for acid reflux in teenagers.

Heartburn (GERD) Simple Diet Changes for Prevention and Cure

acid reflux diseaseHeartburn is the common name for GERD, or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. Here we are going to give you some advice to prevent heartburn (GERD) and relieve the symptoms of this unpleasant condition.

Why Does Heartburn Occur?

GERD, occurs when enzymes and stomach acid escape the stomach and rise into the esophagus.

Unlike the stomach, which is protected by a thick layer of mucus, the esophagus is susceptible to damage due to the strong digestive juices in the stomach and may be damaged over time.

More specifically, the GERD effect happens when the sphincter between the stomach and esophagus is weakened and the pressure between the stomach and esophagus is uneven.


Why is heartburn so unpleasant?

When the pressure in the stomach is too high or the pressure in the esophagus is too low, with the sphincter is relaxed, the stomach acid can flow backward, up into the esophagus.

This is always experienced as an unpleasant burning sensation that gradually travels upward from the stomach into the throat, along with a sour, bitter taste in the mouth.

The stomach digestive liquids can also reach the upper esophagus and trachea, causing or worsening a variety of conditions, such as asthma, chronic cough, sinusitis (swelling of the sinuses), pneumonia, and other.

What are the causes?

GERD can be caused by any number of reasons, but generally the list includes (but is not limited to) the following:

Side effects of certain medications, obesity, pregnancy, menopause, inherited traits, large and too frequent meals,poor dietary habits, smoking, surgical or other damage to the lower esophageal sphincter, esophagitis, and reclining too soon after a meal.

Quite naturally you must see your doctor if you have this condition, and if it persists more than a single occasion once in a while.

The taking of over-the-counter antacid remedies can actually worsen the problem by weakening the digestive process (due to the medication’s rebound effect), and as they almost always contain heavy metals (aluminum or magnesium)and can have negative consequences to the neurological system.

Rules To Avoid Heartburn

There are some simple rules, some foods to avoid, and a sleeping position that are proven to limit, and even eliminate GERD and the GERD effect.

Rules to follow:

1. Do not eat later than 3 hours before plan to sleep. Generally, try to eat early in the evening, and always make the evening meal a light one.

2. Reduce your weight.

3. Stop smoking

4. Do not wear very tight clothing that could constrict the abdomen

5. Generally do not eat large meals, but smaller ones, and in the evening before reclining, do not eat any food on the restricted list.

6. Before sleeping, spend a few moments at a window and do some deep breathing, inhaling and exhaling deeply.

This will energize your nervous system and can assist in the prevention of GERD if the other measures are also followed.

Dietary Restrictions: The evening meal must not be large, or heavy, and completed no later than 3 hours before your intended sleep.

Foods to Avoid

There are many foods that must be avoided, and the following list is indicative only It is a guide to sensible evening eating. By use of the word “avoid” below, we do not mean eliminate, but if you plan to eat any of the following, eat them sparingly.

1. Avoid all acid containing foods (such as coffee, tea, chocolate, orange juice, cranberry juice, tomatoes and tomato sauce), spicy foods (such as garlic and onion). Avoid all soft drinks such as coca-cola and Pepsi cola, and except for special natural mineral digestive waters, all soda water in any form.

2. Avoid fried and fatty foods

3. Avoid any alcohol, peppermint/spearmint, and chocolate.

4. Avoid as much as possible dairy products, including cheese, egg and egg-containing products.

5. Finally, avoid all chewing gum, and any form of sugar, candy or desserts.

The list above may seem restrictive, but any of the foods eaten in excess before sleep can worsen and aggravate the GERD condition.

Avoid Heartburn Physical Measures:

Arrange your bed and pillows to support your shoulders, and elevate your truck to a 15degree angle. This physical limitation does wonders (using gravity) to restrict the GERD effect.

Simple measures to alleviate heartburn

The three measure, as in common sense rules, dietary restriction and sleep position can limit or eliminate the GERD effect.

Should it not, we recommend you consult your doctor immediately for additional measures, as GERD, if left untreated can lead to much more serious conditions.
