WHAT IS GERD?
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder, known more commonly as GERD, is an affliction that begins as simple heartburn but can develop into something much more dangerous. The naturally occurring acid in the human stomach is just as acidic as battery acid. This may sound scary, but the stomach is designed to accommodate this acid with no problems. However, when the valve between the stomach and the esophagus does not function properly, this acid can leak into the esophagus, which is not designed to withstand the acid. When this happens occasionally with mild discomfort, this is the everyday annoyance we know as heartburn, also known as acid reflux. When it happens more frequently or severely, it is a symptom of GERD. Over time, it can lead to erosion of the lining of the esophagus, an extremely painful condition which can lead to bleeding, ulcers, infection, and even an increased risk of esophageal cancer. There are a variety of medications available to treat GERD. The simplest treatment is an over-the-counter antacid, either as a chewable tablet or a liquid. Prescription treatments include agents that coat the esophagus to protect it from acid, speed up the digestive system so that acid is emptied from the stomach before it has a chance to flow up the esophagus, or block the pumps in the stomach from creating more acid.
